Higher education today faces many challenges, and a solid grounding in the Franciscan tradition can strengthen a university. A Franciscan approach to responding to the needs of the times often entails learning along the way through direct engagement. Handing on the Franciscan charism in a small university is often not a systematic, structured endeavor. Instead it may develop in response to a series of questions: How might a committee of lay employees articulate the Franciscan charism for the university? What would it look like to integrate the Franciscan values into the general education curriculum? What might happen if we have a Franciscan Mission Team focused on finding ways to integrate the Franciscan tradition throughout the university? Eventually the charism becomes a bouquet of “little flowers” planted throughout the campus community.
