Antiphon: Holy Virgin Mary
Psalm [III]
1Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me*
because my soul places its trust in you. Ps 57:2 [Vulgate, Ps 56:2]
2I will hope in the shadow of your wings*
until wickedness pass by. Ps 57:2 [Vulgate, Ps 56:2]
3I will cry to the Most High God, my most holy Father,*
who has done good to me. Ps 57:3 [Vulgate, Ps 56:3]
4He has sent from heaven and delivered me;* Ps 57:4 [Vulgate, Ps 56:4]
He has disgraced those who have trampled upon me. Ps 57:4 [Vulgate, Ps 56:4]
5God has sent His mercy and His truth;*
He has snatched my life from the strongest of my enemies + Ps 57:5 [Vulgate, Ps 56:5]
and from those who hated me for they were too powerful for me. Ps 18:18 [Vulgate, Ps 17:18]
6They prepared a trap for my feet*
and bowed down my soul. Ps 57:7 [Vulgate, Ps 56:7]
7They dug a pit before my face*
and fell into it themselves! Ps 57:7 [Vulgate, Ps 56:7]
8My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready;*
I will sing and chant a psalm. Ps 57:8 [Vulgate, Ps 56:8]
9Arise, my glory, arise psalter and harp,*
I will arise at dawn. Ps 57:9 [Vulgate, Ps 56:9]
10I will praise you among the peoples, O Lord,*
I will chant a psalm to you among the nations. Ps 57:10 [Vulgate, Ps 56:10]
11Because your mercy is exalted even to the skies,*
and your truth even to the clouds. Ps 57:11 [Vulgate, Ps 56:11]
12Be exalted above the heavens, O God,*
and may your glory be over all the earth. Ps 57:12 [Vulgate, Ps 56:12]
[Note that the preceding psalm is always recited at Prime]
- The people of the Middle Ages commonly held that the setting of Prime was the hour when Christ was brought before Pilate. While the first eight psalm verses form a prayer for strength, the final four express one of praise. Thus Prime becomes for Francis the hour recalling both Christ’s appearance before Pilate and His resurrection.

Psalmus [III]
1Miserere mei, Deus, miserere mei *
quoniam in te confidit anima mea.
2Et in umbra alarum tuarum sperabo *
donec transeat iniquitas.
3Clamabo ad sanctissimum patrem meum altissimum *
Dominum, qui benefecit mihi.
4Misit de caelo et liberavit me ∗
dedit in opprobrium conculcantes me.
5Misit Deus misericordiam suam, et veritatem suam e *
animan meam eripuit de inimicis meis fortissimis et ab his,
qui oderunt me, quoniam confortati sunt super me.
6Laqueum paraverunt pedibus meis *
et incurvaverunt animam meam.
7Foderunt ante faciem meam foveam *
et inciderunt in eam.
8Paratum cor meum, Deus, paratum, cor meum, *
cantabo et psalmum dicam.
9Exsurge, gloria mea, exsurge psalterium et cithara *
exsurgam diluculo.
10Confitebor tibi in populis, Domine *
et psalmum dicam tibi in gentibus.
11Quoniam magnificata est usque ad caelos misericordia tua*
et usque ad nubes veritas tua.
12Exaltare super caelos Deus *
et super omnem terram gloria tua.
[Nota, quod praedictus psalmus semper dicitur ad primam.]
