Antiphon: Holy Virgin Mary
Psalm [II]
1Lord, God of my salvation,*
I cry day and night to you. Ps 88:2 [Vulgate, Ps 87:2]
2Let my prayer enter into your sight;*
incline your ear to my prayer. Ps 88:3 [Vulgate, Ps 87:3]
3Attend to my soul and free it;*
set me free because of my enemies. Ps 69:19 [Vulgate, Ps 68:19]
4For it was you who took me out of the womb,+
you, my hope from my mother’s breasts.*
I have been cast upon you from the womb. Ps 22:10 [Vulgate, Ps 21:10]
5From my mother’s womb you have been my God;*
do not depart from me. Ps 22:11 [Vulgate, Ps 21:11]
6You know my disgrace, my confusion*
and my reverence. Ps 69:20 [Vulgate, Ps 68:20]
7All those who trouble me are in your sight;*
My heart has expected abuse and misery. Ps 69:21 [Vulgate, Ps 68:21]
8I looked for someone to grieve together with me+
and there was none,*
for someone to console me and I found none. Ps 69:21 [Vulgate, Ps 68:21]
9God, the wicked have risen against me,*
the assembly of the powerful has sought my life;*
they have not placed you in their sight. Ps 86:14 [Vulgate, Ps 85:14]
10I am numbered among those who go down into the pit.* Ps 88:5 [Vulgate, Ps 87:5]
I have become as someone without help, cut off among the dead. Ps 88:6 [Vulgate, Ps 87:6]
11You are my most Holy Father,*
my King and my God. Ps 44:5 [Vulgate, Ps 43:5]
12Come to my aid,*
Lord God of my salvation. Ps 38:23 [Vulgate, Ps 37:23]
- The psalm verses chosen for Matins cannot be related easily to a single scene of the Passion. While verses 4 and 5 suggest Christ’s uninterrupted self-emptying in obedience to His Father, the introductory verses 1, 2 and 3 form a prayer for deliverance. Verses 6 through 10 conjure up images of Jesus’ capture and trial and the final verses, 11 and 12, His utter confidence in a loving Father.

Ad Matutinum
Antiphona: Sancta Maria Virgo
Psalmus [II].
1Domine Deus salutis meae*
in die clamavi et nocte coram te. 2Intret in conspectu tuo oratio mea*
inclina aurem tuam ad precem, meam.
3Intende animae meae et libera eam,*
propter inimicos meos eripe me.
4Quoniam tu es, qui abstraxisti me de ventre+
spes mea ab uberibus matris meae*
in te proiectus sum, ex utero.
5De ventre matris meae Deus meus es tu*
ne discesseris a me.
6Tu scis improperium meum et confusionem meam*
et reverentiam meam.
7In conspectu tuo sunt omnes, qui tribulant me*
improperium exspectavit cor meum et miseriam.
8Et sustinui, qui simul contristaretur+
et non fuit*
et qui consolaretur et non inveni.
9Deus, iniqui insurrexerunt in me*
12Intende in adiutorium meum
Domine Deus salutis meae.
