Second Mass
1. Introit
Let us all rejoice in the Lord as we celebrate this feast day in honor of the blessed Francis; it is a solemnity which causes the Angels to rejoice, and to praise together the Son of God.a Exult in the Lord, you righteous; praising befits those who are upright. Ps 33:1 [Vulgate, Ps 32:1]
2. Prayer (See First Mass)
3. Epistle (See First Mass)
4. Gradual
The mouths of the just speak wisdom and their lips say what is right.
v/. The law of their God is in their heart, their steps shall be saved from stumbling.b
Alleluia, alleluia
v/. O Patriarch of paupers true,
Francis, amplify by your prayers
The number of those who are yours,
In the charity of Christ;
Whom, crossing your hands and growing
Blind, like Jacob on his death-bed,
You gave your benediction.c
Alleluia
v/. Francis, once poor and meager, enters heaven enriched, and is honored with celestial hymns.
- The Introit is similar to that of the Mass for the Feast of All Saints.
- The Gradual is taken from the Mass of Common of a Confessor-non-Pontiff.
- Cf. 1C 108, a reference to Francis’s own death and its similarity to that of Jacob.
