awake, not while sleeping—and began to shout: "Brother Conrad! Dear Brother Conrad! Hurry! Run and see something wonderful!" During these words the holy vision slipped away. And after this, holy Conrad arrived, to whom he told all of this in detail. And they were both consoled by this, and returned thanks to God.

HOW GOD OPENED TO BROTHER JAMES OF MASSA THE DOOR OF HIS SECRETSa

1 Brother Giles of Assisi and Brother Marco of Montino knew of no one in the world and believed there was no one greater than Brother James of Massa for whom God opened the door to His secrets.b Brother Juniper and Brother Lucido felt the same way. I made the effort to see him, at the direction of Brother John, the companion of Brother Giles.c When for the purpose of edification I was questioning Brother John about something, Brother John said to me: "If you wish to be instructed in things spiritual, hurry to talk to Brother James of Massa, because Brother Giles desired to be illuminated by him, and could not add anything to or subtract anything from his talks . . ." And that his mind had passed over to hidden things, and words are the words of the Holy Spirit, and that there is no man on earth whom I desire so much to see.d

4 Around the beginning of the ministry of Brother John of Parma, this same Brother James was once enraptured and remained insensible for three days, so much so that the brothers began to wonder if he were dead.e He was given the knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures, and divinely given knowledge of the future.

5 I asked him: "If what I heard about you is true, do not hide it from me. For I heard that at the time when you lay as if dead for three days, God showed you, among other things, the things which will happen in the religion." For Brother Matteo, who was then the Minister of the Province of the Marches, called Brother James to him after this rapture and under obedience ordered him to make known to him what he had seen.
