SAINT ANTHONY PREACHES IN ONE LANGUAGE AND IS UNDERSTOOD BY PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGESa
1 Saint Anthony of Padua, that admirable vessel of the Holy Spirit, was one of the chosen disciples of Blessed Francis. While he was preaching before the pope and cardinals in a Council where there were Greeks and Latins, French, Germans, Slavs, English, and many others of diverse tongues and languages, Acts 2:4 Saint Francis called him his bishop.b Filled with the breath of the Holy Spirit, inflamed by the tongue of an apostle, and pouring out the honey-sweet word of God, he held them suspended in great admiration and devotion because all those of such diverse languages gathered at the council heard him sharply and clearly and understood him distinctly. It seemed that the ancient miracle of the apostles had been renewed as they said in amazement: "Is he not a Spaniard?c How do we all hear him in our own native language, Greeks and Latins, French and Germans, Slavs and English, Lombards and foreigners?"
4 The pope, amazed at the profound things set before them from the Holy Scriptures by Saint Anthony, said: "He is truly 'the ark of the covenant' and 'the repository of Holy Scripture.' "d
5 Such were the knights that Saint Francis, our leader, had, capable of feeding not only the flock of Christ but even the Vicar of Christ and his venerable college with the rich food of the Holy Spirit, supplying them with heavenly weapons against the snares of the enemy.
To the praise of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
