discovering that the saint's cord was untied from his little cord, he got up immediately to look for the holy Father as he had planned. When he found the gate leading to the woods open, realizing the saint had gone out that way, he immediately went into the woods after him and made his way to the top of the hill where Saint Francis had stopped to pray. When the boy stopped for a little while, he began to hear in the distance many voices speaking. Going closer so that he might more clearly hear what was being said, he suddenly saw a wonderful light surrounding Blessed Francis on all sides, and in that light he saw Christ and the Blessed glorious Mary and blessed John the Baptist and the Evangelist and a very great multitude of angels speaking with Blessed Francis. On seeing and hearing all this, the boy, trembling, was taken in ecstasy and fell as if dead on the path by which the saint was about to return.
10 When this wondrous and sacred conversation was finished, Saint Francis started back to the place. As he was returning, it was still night, and with his feet he found the boy lying as if dead on the path. The holy Father, moved by compassion, lifted him up in his loving arms and, like a good shepherd, he carried his own little sheep back to bed. Later, learning from the boy that he had seen that vision, he ordered him to tell no one as long as the saint lived. The boy obeyed the order and, in the grace of God and the devotion of Saint Francis, he ended well as an important man in the Order. After the death of Saint Francis, he himself revealed this to the brothers.
To the praise and glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
