inanimate things obey, wild animals become tame, and to whom irrational creatures direct their attention eagerly. In his benevolence the Lord of all things listens to his prayer, as in his liberality he provides food, gives guidance by the brightness of light, so that every creature is subservient to him as a man of extraordinary sanctity, and even the Creator of all condescends to him.a
- This nuanced transition from self-emptying to the stigmata, with reference to the theme of light, is not found in LMj where the account of the stigmata in Chapter XIII is preceded by accounts of preaching and miracles. The theme of condescension or condescensio, which is woven through Bonaventure’s thought, sets the stage for the stigmatization of Francis. Divine condescension, witnessed in the incarnation of Christ and manifested in stigmata, is rooted in God’s love for humanity. Self-emptying presupposes the radical poverty of created reality which looks to the Creator for redemption.
